In James 3:10 we read these words “Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing my brethren, these things ought not to be.” Just what is brother James talking about? Just back up a few sentences and you will see that he is talking about our tongues and how fast it can say things we really don’t want it to say.
Our words can have healing things to say or if as I’ve written previously, if our minds are not in tune with God’s word and it is not being renewed daily by His word, then we will say things in the heat of an emotional moment things that can tear down and hurt someone we love.
Over in Isaiah 57:19 God says that He creates the fruit of our lips, and in Hebrews 13:15 the writer tells us to give thanks to God continuously by the fruit of our lips. Our words will always be used to create or tear down. It is always up to us to decide who uses our words; God or the devil? Whoever created the phrase “sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me” was mistaken. Words are some of the most destructive things we can ever be hurt with.
As Christians we are to create and restore life back into ourselves and others. Life creates, death destroys, it’s our choice! Our spoken words are much more important than we realize. We should look for opportunities to help others see that God’s words are important and they are for today. It is time to understand that the Bible is more than a holy book. It is much more than that. The very words of God are contained within those paper pages.
The Bible is His instruction manual to us for every aspect of our daily lives. Every answer to our many questions, every problem we will ever face, even to the food we eat, how to have money and how to use it wisely, and how to use our words to create life. It’s all in there; but until you read it and allow it to transform you, it is just words. When we allow His words to come out of our mouths they will accomplish what they were spoken to do by God (Isaiah 55:11).
But until you read and study it, and dig out the answers of tomorrow, which were written yesterday, and allow it to create what you need for today, this is when it becomes part of who you are in Christ. We as children of God have to be able to control our tongues and the words we speak. We cannot do this on our own, it will take us years of allowing the Word of God to renew our minds until we are able to think like Him.
I know that in Isaiah 55:8-9 it says that Gods thoughts are not our thoughts but this was before Jesus came and introduced the New Testament to us and God allowed us to become part of His family through believing in His only begotten Son Jesus. In Philippians 2:5 it tells us to allow this mind (the mind of Christ) to be in us. The only way this happens is through the renewal of our minds by His word and allowing His thoughts to become our thoughts on this earth.
I hope I’ve been able to say something that will allow you to speak life and not death as you run your own race of life on this earth we call home. Remember you will make it, just don’t give up. See you next week as we study God’s word together.
