Time Traveler

Last night as I started to drift off to sleep, I had this thought,” Time Traveler”. I have always known day by day life, but recently I came to realize that we are alive in the moment. We have only three aspects of life. (1) Yesterday or the past. (2) Today or the moment. (3) Future or what we are getting ready to do with our moment of “Life.” We can not do anything about our past, but our future is determined by what we do with our moment.

Take for example last night. I wanted to sleep for about eight hours of time travel or rest as we call it. But it really is time travel into our future of tomorrow, which at the time we wake up it is today or the moment. I went to sleep in the now or present, which is now my past and wake up in the future of today. I think this is just fascinating. We make all of our decisions based on what we know or feel, then we act on them. Right or wrong is what we figure out as we do what we are programed to do by our life learning cycle. Can we travel to the past? Are all three happening at the same time? Or, is the past existing only in our minds? Something to use to determine our future. Information that allows us to change must be what the past is all about. We time travel to the past just to review what we did and allow us to make decisions that are more fact filled, to make our future better.

The apostle Paul in (Philippians 3:13,14) his letters to the Church said to forget the past and press on to the future of our high calling in Christ Jesus, or to focus on the goal and not on ourselves. Looking at our past only brings regret and keeps us focused on our mistakes. Why focus on your mistakes, when you can use them to better your tomorrow. You made those decisions in your past, based on what information you had available at the time you made those decisions. So why not use that information for your good to better yourself in your future?

A friend of mine was dying and all he could focus on was his past mistakes and he longed to be able to fix them. I believe he died in this way. I do not know if anyone tried to get him out of his past and refocus on what the Lord did with him in the past twenty years or so. He lived a good life after he met the Lord Jesus as his Savior. But he was defeated in this area of his life. Regret probably brought on the sickness that took his life.

You will always be defeated if you allow the battle to go on in your mind. Remember, after you are saved you have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). But it will take the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2), and it will be a battle.
You will make it, just don’t give up. See you next week.

  1. Never thought of our life as “time travel” but understand your point(s). Paul didn’t want us to forget our past in the sense of not learning from our mistakes and sins but just as your friend did, Paul did not want us to live and dwell in our past. To do so is crippling even if our past is of good reputation as it keeps us from relationship with the Lord. Paul wants us to continually move and push forward as he says “press toward the mark of the high calling of God” in our relationship with the Lord and allow the Holy Spirit to continually transform our minds so that we become more like the Lord. Great blog, thanks for posting, I also needed to read this and meditate on it.
