Have you ever wondered where is Gods secret place that the psalmist David wrote about in Psalms 91:1? I have been on a quest as of late about this place that is so secret, where God resides. Where or what is it? How does a human being find this place that is secret? I have done several studies on Psalms 91 in the past 10 years, but never to my satisfaction on what is this secret place, and can I find it? A lot of questions to try and discuss in a short study on such an important question.
In Matthew 6:6 Jesus says this, “to enter into a closet and pray.” Is he talking about a special room? Jesus is telling us to go to a quiet place and shut the door! But is he telling us to go to a special location in our home to pray? Not necessarily, but it can be. I believe he is telling us to set aside a special time to be alone, without distractions, and spend some quality time with him (Bible).
When we allow ourselves to do this, it is logical that we will get to know him better. Remember when you were courting your wife or husband, you wanted to spend as much time together alone with them as possible; and as you did, you got to know them better. Same principle for us; time alone with God allows us to get to know Him better by reading His Word, talking or praying, and then listening for Him to speak to us.
Secret places to hide in are better shared with someone you love or trust. Do you really trust God? How much do you love Him? How often is He on your mind? These questions should be our motivation to be alone with Him every chance we can. But, life has a unique way of interfering with our plans. There has to be an easier way to make or find this secret place!
Is this secret place a physical location where God is? Probably not, as it is more likely a spiritual rest that prevails, regardless of outward circumstances. When we choose to leave behind the worlds delights, in favor of this new and better lifestyle of spiritual devotion, we will enter that place of rest as God draws closer to us as we draw closer to Him. (James 4:8)
Time spent with God in this way will reveal things in our lives that need tweaking or even removed. Remember His thoughts will become your thoughts, as you spend time with Him. (Isaiah 55:8-9, Philippians 2:5-11) Gods ways will become our ways as we spend time with Him.
We are not lost and without hope if we have believed on Him, and as we renew our minds with the Word of God, we will begin to think and then act like Him, who is our Father. Remember we are a new creation that has never existed before (2 Corinthians 5:13) as we believe on Jesus Christ.
Does this secret place promise us protection from harm? Let’s look at verse 1&2 and see what we find. “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress; my God; in Him will I trust.” KJV
In verse 1 we find these statements, (1) Dwelling in the secret place, (2) Confess the Lord is my refuge and fortress, (3) Trust will become the result. There are numerous times this scripture was spoken over men that were away at war. Their mothers were praying this scripture over them and they were miraculously delivered from harm or even death.
But I’m getting way too wordy without telling you what I believe is the “real secret place of God.” The secret place of the Most High God is the very essence of God! So I suggest that you substitute the word Love for the word secret “he who dwells in love, shall abide under the protection of the Almighty.”
The moment we walk out of the love walk, we become visible to our enemy as vulnerable. Jesus was the first person who had ever walked the love walk 24/7 to have ever lived since Adam and Eve. He was protected from harm everywhere he went. He was never vulnerable to the enemy at any time. ( I hope to write on this subject in a later blog.)
In Barnes notes we find this statement as he talked about Psalms 31:20 and 32:7, “abiding where God dwells, the idea is there of having ones home or residence in the most holy place in the temple of God or Throne Room and of you sitting with Him in that place. He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High.
The blessing here provided are not for all believers, but for those who live in close fellowship with God. Every child of God looks toward the inner sanctuary and the mercy seat, yet all do not dwell in the most holy place. They may run to it at times, and enjoy occasional approaches, but they do not habitually reside in the presence of God…”
These are the ones who know what it is to be raised up together, and made to sit together with Christ in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6). I want you to understand that this is my conclusion to finding Gods secret place. God is said to be totally love in First John 4:8 and John 4:6. So this secret place God dwells in is love, we are also able to dwell there if we just love and never leave the walk of love.
If you want to know what the love walk is I suggest you read chapter 13 of 1 Corinthians. King James Translators used the word charity for love, but it is the same word or meaning. Without love we are just clanging cymbals and the world will not hear our message of love because our actions do not align with our words.
The vast majority of Christians today are not there, and that may include you and I also. We may walk there a little, but we fail miserably most of the time. To me this is the difference between a Christian and a Disciple of Jesus Christ. A Christian is forgiven and 100% saved, but a Disciple is one who walks and talks like Jesus, and everyone can see Jesus in them.
As I end this letter today, I hope my conclusion makes sense to you and that you will strive to walk in love and be a blessing to everyone you meet. After all you may be the only Bible they will ever read. Remember you will make it, just don’t give up. See you next time as we study Gods Word together.
