I have written before about the tithe back in 2021, and the tithe is probably my most studied subject, having written over 20 separate studies on it. It has caused much heartache and condemnation in the body of Christ worldwide. Please go back and read my 2021 letter on it, as I believe it will clear up much confusion you may have. But this letter will be listing all the scripture concerning it that I believe is applicable to this subject.
Old Testament: Genesis 14:20, Leviticus 27:30-31; Numbers 18: 24-26; Deuteronomy 12: 6, 11, 17, 14:22; 2 Chronicles 31:5, 12; Nehemiah 10:37-38, 12:44, 13:5; Amos 4:4; Malachi 3:10.
New Testament: Matthew 23:23; Luke 11:42, 18:12; Hebrews 7:5.
I will start by book, beginning with Genesis 14:20: “ he gave him tithes of all”. Abraham gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the goods of the spoils of war, not anything out of his own wealth. This is also the only mention of Abraham ever tithing again. The whole tithing teaching hangs on this scripture are taken out of context with what he did. This is so wrong! The New Testament never tells the Church to tithe. The Holy Spirit never gave Paul, Peter, Matthew, Luke, John, nor any other writer to instruct the Church to tithe. Give yes, but never tithe.
Leviticus 27:30-31 is the next time tithe is mentioned “and all the tithe of the land, of the seed of the land, of the fruit of the tree, it is the Lords, it is holy unto the Lord. And if a man will at all redeem, of his tithes, he shall add a fifth part thereof.”
As you can see by reading this chapter that God considers everything that Israel had and lived in belonged to Him. He gave it to them by conquest and since they did not want to be a tribe of priest this caused God to make the Levites the only tribe of priest. God then used this tax upon the land to provide for them as this Priesthood required them to have no land or inheritance except the Lord God.
He made it plain to them that if they were too far from the temple of God then they could sell it and then bring the money with them to where the temple was. But when they got there the money and another 20% tax upon their original tithe was to be added. Then they had to repurchase their tithe and bring it before Him. God knew his people and how they loved to make a profit so this extra tax discouraged them from doing this too often.
Numbers 18:24 “ but the tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer as an heave offering unto the Lord, I have given to the Levites to inherit, therefore I have said unto them, among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.”
In this chapter God lays out the way for the Levites to share the wealth of which the other tribes give unto them as an offering unto the Lord (they are all priest, all of them) they are entitled to for their upkeep and support. When the tithe was brought in, then the Levites were to tithe the best of it again and give it to Aaron as an offering unto the Lord.
Deuteronomy 12:6,11,17 This is about the tribes of Israel and their duty to support the Levit Priesthood, and for them to make sure it happens.
Deuteronomy 14:22 Once again we see that the tithe was only about the seed of the field and the animals that ate of those fields. This chapter breaks down how to care for and transport the tithe where God wants it taken to. He allows them to sell it and transport the money, but when they get to the place where God has chosen, then they are to spend that money and repurchase it again, but with the 20% tax added unto it.
Deuteronomy 26:12 This is the third year of tithing and they were to give it to the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, the widow for their food.
2 Chronicles 31:5,12 The tithe was reinstituted .
Nehemiah 10:38 This is about the fruit of the ground.
Amos 3:10 The tithe after 3 years.
Malachi 3:10 “ Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in my house…” God was upset with the people for not supporting the Priesthood of the Levites (not the church).
Such misery that misinformed preachers can cause by this wrong teaching about the tithe. Such hardship should not be upon the children of God. He said in his word He loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:6-7) and one can never be cheerful when they are forced to do something. Paul wrote this to the church at Corinth and told them to give as they were able to, not forced to.
This is the reason that some minsters become millionaires and ignore the way they became one, by fear and intimidation, using the Bible incorrectly. Telling people that God demands this (Malachi 3:10) and that God instituted the tithe, which He did, but not the way or reason they teach.
I am more than upset, as I also was under condemnation for years until I finally read and studied about the tithe. We are new testament Christians that should have hearts to give unto those in the Church that really need our help and financial support. I hope you all will read this letter and become givers and not tithers. Your family comes first and you must support them and give as you can afford to. Sometimes all that someone needs is your help, not your money. Be cheerful and give as the Lord tells you to. Be responsible with the money you make and if you don’t know how to make ends meet, get some help.
I love you all and only want to see you have a blessed life and fulfill the plan of God for you. Keep in the race and look for opportunities to give, sow and reap your rewards that God gives you. You cannot out-give God. Always remember, you will make it, just don’t give up. See you next week.
