What Must I Do To Be Saved?

I have written 72 blogs and I think this question is most important to someone reading my blog who is unsure how to know they are saved. I may have touched on it a few times, but to just give you what the Bible records is our only answer. The Word of God is the only sure thing we have to establish our eternal future on. God is never going to lie and his word can be depended upon to be right.

This letter will be words by me and as much scripture as I can find to allow you to have the truth as told by God as He directed the writers of old as they wrote letters to the fledging Christian church as it developed. I will start with the book of John, and go through to the Epistles of John.

John 3:15-16- Jesus is talking with Nicodemus about the new birth that would be available to all those who believed on Jesus after the Cross, and as Jesus explained to him how Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness even so should the son of man be lifted up- “that whosoever believe the in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world: but that the world through him might be saved.”

In Acts 16:30-31, we find this question being asked by the keeper of the prison where Paul and Silas were being unlawfully detained- “Sirs what must I do to be saved? And they said, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved and thy house.”

Romans 10:9-10-“that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God has raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

Acts 4:12 tells us “ neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Peter and John were telling the rulers of the temple that Jesus is the only way to heaven. Period!

Jesus himself spoke these words to his disciples in John 14:6- “ Jesus saith unto him, (Thomas) I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man comes unto the Father but by me.”

John 11:25-26- “ Jesus said unto her (Martha) I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live, and whoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die, believeth thou this?” Jesus could not be any more plain about him being the Christ of God and only through our belief in him as the Son of God can we be saved. John 3:36- “ He that believeth on the Son hath life:”

In the third chapter of Ephesians in verse eight, Paul tells us how we are saved. “For by Grace are you saved through faith: and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.” The faith to believe that Jesus is the Son of God is given to us by Him. It is His gift to us because of His great love for each of us.

Romans 12:3-4 records this fact “according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.” We are able to believe that Jesus is the Son of God by that measure of faith that God gives each of us, to be able to believe that what He says is true. God even goes further in verse 4 by telling us that this is true and not of anything we can do on our own. He did it as a gift to us. Period!

I assume we are all bothered by “am I really saved?” According to the scriptures I have given to you that if we believe that Jesus is the Son of God, we are saved. And you can’t be any more saved than saved.

John in his letters to us in the epistles he wrote on the Isle of Patmos, he said in 1 John 5:1,13- “whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God:” and in verse 13 he makes this very important statement- “these things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may believe on the name of the Son of God.”

We have it by faith in the name of Jesus right now while we are still in this earth suit of flesh. Over in Hebrews 11:1 it says this- “ now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” We dare to believe the Word of God is what sets us apart from the world.

Faith is a very real thing. In fact we could say it is the currency of Heaven whereby we are able to get the things we need while on this earth. Salvation being the object that we are discussing in this letter. I do hope I have explained it clearly enough for you to know you are saved if you have believed.

Remember you will make it, just don’t give up. See you in my next letter to all of you as we run our race towards home.
