Once We Were Free

In a land of the forgotten past there once was a land of the free, where you could say what was on your mind, your beliefs, your fears, your peeves, and it mattered not that anyone would agree, it was your sacred right as a citizen of that land to say and be free.

This right was so sacred that the founding Fathers put it into writing to protect it from censure by those who would oppose your right to say it. But like I said, it was a time of long ago and is forbidden now by unconstitutional laws to speak as a free man any more.

No longer are you permitted to speak your mind and present your opinions that matter so much to you. Everyone has their own opinions don’t you agree? But do they meet with public approval? I fear not, as we really are not free, nor ever will be.

Where are those who were supposed to protect this sacred right of a free man to express themselves? Why are they so convinced that oppression of speech is good for mankind? Our opinions are part of our unique personalities and without them we are limited as to who we really are.

These people who kept this sacred trust are almost gone, taken away by the siren song of corruption and greed. Forgotten by those who call themselves free and are governed by self indulgence fools who have no soul or conscience to even try to protect our sacred right to be free.

Awake! Awake! While there is still time to rescue the dim glimmer of hope we once had in the land of the free. How could this happen to a people who once were free? Slowly, ever so slowly, we were lulled into slumber by those who oppressed this land of the free.

By masterful strokes of deception, their plan of oppression would blossom into this Venus fly trap, becoming the flower of entertainment to dull the mind of those who once were free. Entertainment was the plan all could see.

Television’s, movies, sports, phones that were beyond all human thought, to capture your time and slow your mind, controlled by words and images that make your life a blur and so sublime, to just allow you to get in line.

Freedom is never free and someone needs to remember that there is a cost to everything even in this land of the free. Once again, awake, awake, out of your entertainment induced slumber, rub your eyes and open your mind, look out for we really are blind!

I hope you enjoyed this poem and I hope to continue doing a weekly mini post every Wednesday. I wrote this in April 2022.

  1. I enjoyed reading your poem and it’s so true in the time we’re living in. Once we were Free, but think again, too much TV, News Media, Movies we need to be aware of what we allowed to go into our minds… it takes away from what we truly need and that’s the word of God. Thank you, my friend, for sharing your poem.
