What Is Worship?

Worship is an act of extravagant respect, full of adoration which produces a desire to fall or bow before God to show Him how much you are in awe of Him as your God and how much you are in love with Him and want to be in His presence. Does anyone act this in worship today? Are we to be this way with our Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit? Do you put yourself in His presence like this or something even close to being in awe of Him, who loved you enough to die for you so you could be with Him forever?

Our modern day Church service’s are a sham of worship. We have this agenda that we call worship service. Greetings, prayer, 3 songs, take up the money, prayer and maybe 30 minutes of preaching and then maybe an alter call. Sound familiar? Where is this thing called on worship as I have described in my opening paragraph? How do we get back in line with what the Bible calls worship?

The more confident we are of ourselves the more confidence we will have in our God. We are God’s children, are we not? Do you have any idea of who you really are? If not, then we will not know who God is will we? How much more would we worship Him if we really understood who we are now on this earth, not in some distant time way out in the future after we die.

I believe that for us to understand what real heartfelt worship is we must go all the way back to the beginning. Look at Genesis 3:8 and you will see that God came looking for Adam and Eve in the cool of the day. They were Gods children and when they heard God calling for them they became afraid. I believe this story is about worship in the purest sense of it.

How can this story of the fall of man be about worship? Glad you asked. It does not say that this was the everyday scene where God comes to the garden, but I believe it was. God enjoyed this garden and He was excited when His children came running to His call. They were true worshippers of God and they enjoyed His presence as a way of life. Loving their Father and being near to Him was the first worship of mankind. All real worship is a matter of the heart.

We read in John 4:23-24 that true worship is in spirit and in truth. What does this really mean? God is not a power to be dreaded nor is He vengeance to be appeased, He is our Father who loves us as we draw near to Him with our heart set on fellowshipping with Him. I mean we are to go looking for Him just so we can be near to Him.

Worship is a subject that David knew a lot about. Just read through the Psalms and you will see. Worship is both an attitude of your mind as well as an act of your body as in dancing, raising your hands, and singing out His praises. We are a three part being so all three parts, spirit, soul, and body, come as one as we get before Him in worship.

It is not totally our fault that we do not know how to worship as David did. We are not taught how to be Kings kids, we have no royal mindset as do the English. We have lost our innocence as children and we are afraid of being different, being ourselves. How we act in private does not always get revealed when we are in public. We are self conscious instead of being God conscious. So sad!

In Matthew 18:1-5 Jesus is expressing the requirement of being a member of His kingdom, by using a small child as His example. To be childlike not childish, to be humble and teachable, totally without pride. This is the first obstacle we must overcome. Focusing on God and shutting the world out. Being lost in seeking to enter into His presence. Sometimes we get lost in the moment but more often we are just lost when it comes to worship. If you do not worship God at home how can you know how to worship Him in Church?

Music can be the key to unlocking the door of worship, but more often it is only our souls that get touched. We are our own problem, we, our human side. Pride is all too common with mankind. Fear is the result. What will the person next to me think? Like I have pointed out, we have to become as children in our thoughts. Remember what it was like when your daddy came home from work? We were excited to see him. I know this is a carnal view but it is only to be set as our example. Adam and Eve were excited to be near God and when they fell they were afraid of Him.

We as born again children of God never have to be afraid of Him ever again. Even when we sin! Just go to Him and tell Him you are sorry you fell again, and let His love cover you as a blanket and make you all better again.

When you enter into His presence with a joyful heart remembering all the things He has brought you through in this race of life you have been in all these years, then you will begin to enjoy and express yourself in true worship and fellowship with your Father. You will begin to experience real worship, heartfelt worship from all three parts of who you really are.

I struggle with worship just as you do. I have been lost in it and at other times it is just a sham. Remember, we all are in training to be Priest fit for the Kingdom of God in our future. Also remember you will make it, just don’t give up. You are on the right track headed for home. Just keep learning and try to stay focused on the goal of seeing Jesus face to face as He welcomes you home as a winner.

I hope this helps you to become better at real worship of God. Just be real in His presence, be yourself, everyone else is already taken. Just let Holy Spirit teach you (John 14:26) as He is the one most qualified to. See you next week.
